Is she old enough for a boyfriend?

You know you can drive when you're 16 and vote when you're 18, but how old do you have to be to have a boyfriend? That's what one of our Pink Locker friends wants to know...

dear pls,
im 12 and i wanted to know am i too young to have a boyfriend.. if so whats the proper age to have one?
sonakshi, 12
ps --i love ur site

I say it really depends on what you mean by "boyfriend." I'm in 8th grade and boyfriends are common, but couples don't usually last very long. I had one, for about a week, in 7th grade. He was nice but the whole thing just made me feel weird. And, of course, it wasn't Forrest. (Forrest is my crush of all crushes. Read the book to find out more!)

So what do you say, girls? When is the right age to have a boyfriend? Or is there no right age?

Think pink!

It depends. Some parents have a specific age they want. I'd say that as long as you're comfortable with being in a relationship then it's ok. And it also depends if it's a serious relationship or just "puppy love" as they call it; a bf/gf thing that really isn't serious. Your choice. Hope I helped! - Erica :)

I say the right time to have a boyfriend/girlfriend is when you are ready to commit. In middle school if you are dating do you really think about how you will date for ever and someday get married !! i say start dating when you think that it will lead to something......otherwise if both of you like each other then be friends and get to know each other. and then later when you are ready and think that you guys really have something going then.....bring it to the next level !! <3

Well, im 12 too, ive been going out many times. My sisters have when they were my age too! But there is a big difference between dates and going out. Yeah, we are kinda young for relationships, usually it wont last too.My parents let me group "date". You go out with a guy with a bunch of friends or other dates, [that you know]!!!its also a lot more fun and you dont have to worry about the one on one. Also, you really dont need to start kissing and making out...yet. Wait a while, see if you make it... all that stuff.

In my opinion - you are never to young to have a boyfriend! Its just that as you get older, things tend to get more serious. My first boyfriend was in grade 5. Lasted a couple of days but we still did the asking out thing so it counts lol. next boyfriend, late grade 5. This one went a bit loopy because i swear we went out more than twice in one week :S. But grade 6 and this one lasted nearly 2 months. Im in grade 8 now and havent had a boyfriend since :( but hey - in grade 2 i was playing kisschase and kissed a boy on the cheek!!! I dont know - it depends how YOU see it. You decide when your ready tohave a boyfriend or not! Hope that helped!

I agree with the first post. 18 would be good because you are finally an adult. I am in 8th grade and every girl has a boyfriend except me, but I am ok with that because I don't want one. Being in a "relationship" in middle school can cause major drama and cause some poeple feelings to get hurt alot. Plus it can also get in the way of school work too. I have seen this firsthand in some girls who are all A or B students drop down to C students because they were so distracted by their boyfriends. I really don't suggest it becuase some girls especially the ones at my school get way caught up in it and will do anything to please thier boyfriend. So I say you should wait at leas until your junior maybe sophmore year in high school. Or just wait until your parents say you can have one. Remember boyfriends aren't a neccessity and you don't need them to be cool!

12 is too young for a boyfriend. It might seem like everyone else has one but think about it, he will probably become your center of attention and then what are you going to end up leaving behind? and if you don't talk then whats the point. You'll probably be graduating with the people in your classes now so it might be snarter to wait.

my first crush was in Preschool on a guy named Matthew.. I will never forget him. My first boyfriend was in 1st grade i didnt really know what it was. When he asked me to be his girlfriend i was like "Yes. what's that?" It was funny. I satyed with him until 4th grade. Then i thought it was time to move on. We both did actually. My first kiss on the cheek was with my first love. My first kiss on the lips was with the same guy. I loved him so so so so so much. But he had told a very big secret a personal one. So i broke up with him. Now he completely ignores me. I say hi he doesnt even look at me. He blocked me on email, and doesnt answer my fone calls!

Theres no right age really, but if your looking for a real age my opinion would be 17. Cos the younger you are the less complicated it is, and you dont really "love" eachother when your like 12 or 11 and ages like that. I`m just saying 17 cos I`ve heard of a lot of girls get hurt and stuff. Not hurt like the violent way hurt like the shouting way. I think if a relationship with a guy lasts like 2 years or longer you can continue with it but most relationships last like a month. What most guys want today are just skinny and popular girls. They dont always really care if your nice and friendly, and successfull and smart. I`m not saying all guys are like that, there are lots of guyz out there who do only care about ehats on the inside and not on the outside, but there are just as much guys out there who only care whats on the outside and not in the inside. I think if your older you`ll be able to handle stuff like this better too.

Hope this advice helps!

Go ahead and have a bf! I think I am ready!

It depends what you mean by 'boyfriend.' In middle school, a lot of people "go out" without actually going anywhere. You ask someone out, hold hands in between classes, maybe give each other pecks on the lips, and break up soon after. Which is fine and perfectly normal. But when you're twelve you don't need to be actually going on dates, because you're young and still finding yourself. Once you enter high school (and hopefully know a little more about who you are, even if you're still changing) guys become a bigger part of your life. So at 14 dates and actual relationships come to play a lot more. Guys at that age, though, do have their mind in the gutter a LOT, so I wouldn't get very serious with one until about sixteen when you‘re more mature and ready to handle those kinds of things. There are different stages to dating and even though you may want to skip over one and dive straight into another you can't because you have to learn as you go and it's much, much better to make mistakes with a crush early on than a guy you really like (maybe even love) when you're older. So don't jump into things too deep or too fast! You're young and before you know it you'll be ready for a real boyfriend! (And you don't need an exact age either, mine were just estimates, everyone goes at their own pace)

It really depends what you mean by boyfriend. When your little everyone's your boyfriend, you know? But you don't really know what a boyfriend is. When your like 10-14, your boyfriends aren't serious, you don't go on actual dates, but you text eachother and talk on the phone etc. I think when your 15 you start to act more serious about boyfriends, but remember boys mature at a different age. I think a boyfriend you hang out with at school is fine at like 10-14, but actually going out or having serious relationships depends on the person and the maturity.

SORRY IF I BORED YOU TO DEATH LOL!!!

I think school is the number one priority, and that if you are able to handle a boyfriend (one that likes you for the person you truly are inside!!!) it's fine to hang out with a guy. But I wouldn't suggest it to middle schoolers. Usually (trust me I've seen this happen; I was in grade 8 last year) people who are boyfriend/girlfriend tend to be very dramatic (this is middle school bf and gf) and they hook up just for the attention/popularity. I decided that I'll have a boyfriend that is smart, outgoing and fun to be with, AND! that cares about his grades. I have to maintain the 95 average in high school (as best as I can lol) in order to achieve the stuff I want and to get the scholarships that I am aiming for. I can't let an immature popular boy get in my way of reaching my dreams!!!!!!!!! :)
Just remember-
NO RUSH!!!!

I'd say when you graduate, but that's my opinion. Your school is out of the way, you might have moved out, and you need someone to support you while your'e in Uni. My dad said I can have a boyfriend when I was 52, I know he was joking, but I could tell he'd preffer that.lol.
I have never kissed a boy, never gone out, never had a boyfriend, AND I've never ever held hands with a boy. Even in Preschool I rejected being close to boys, in that sort of way. I have pretty good grades I guess. I've had crushes on my best friends, and it really is annoying. I have best friends that are all mostly boys, and they know I act more like a boy then a mushy girl. One of my friends called me a boy one day. It annoyed me but I guess it taught me that I was more playful and aggressive than boys.
I just realized some of this had nothing to do with the question hahahh.

I think 12 is a bit young, but if you date, here are tips. Don't kiss or anything that personal. Hold hands and stuff, but take it slow. Date people who you like for real, not who you think is cute. There was this kid named brian in the third grade and he was kind of cute. Once I told him he was cute he got obsessed with me and claimed we were "dating". I didn't even know him that well, and he won't stop liking me 2 years later! So date a boy who you like for real, and who you trust. Hope this helps! Choose wisely.

Just, dont kiss if you have less than 15 years old. If your parents are OK, you can. You´re so lucky if have boyfriend. I havent got one yet!

the question to ask are... do you really like this guy? how does he feel about you? would you feel okay if your friends teased you about having a "boyfriend?" are you allowed to go out with a boy or a group without your parents? i asked myself these questions and well the answers were no, no, no, and no. so no i am not ready to have a boyfriend

It really depends on what your parents think and what you think. My mom said "not until you are in high school" so I have to go along with it. I think you really don't need a boyfriend outside of school. I have an inside-of-school "boyfriend." You can talk with a guy at lunchtime or during times in class where you are doing absolutely nothing. Also, if there are any school events, ask him to go! The guy I like went to a school basketball game with me (although it wasn't a date because his dad was there) and we'll also be going to the school ice-skating party. Hope this helps!

P.S. Sorry it was so long!

Many people have "boyfriends" that are mostly just friends who do stuff together. I think your age is reasonable to have one of those, but not a serious one 'till high school.

I think you should be a teenager at like 16+. Some parents prefer older. But you don't want anyone to get you ignoring school and your studies

Hey Im 11 and I've had a boyfriend. It didnt turn out well and we broke up super fast. I think You should wait until your in eight grade, but if you want one then I think its ok. But it wont last long. When your older the relationship is much more serious so its like REALLY having a boyfriend! Good luck with your choice! :)

Girls usually like older guys because girls mature faster and want to be with someone mature.Guys usually want to be with younger girls because they are immature and want to be with someone less mature.

I think 13 is O.K... I mean you have a boyfriend when you wana have a boyfriend or whenever your mom and dad think its good. Now alot of girls get mad when there parents say that and trust me i am one of them. BUT our parents no alot more then we do and they no what boys are capable of. Not all boys are like that but your parents want to make sure you NEVER get hurt and they really want to keep you as there little girl. i know we dont think its fair but who knows BEST.? PARENTS :))

Ask your parent or go to a religoius friens like a pastor or a priest. Also think about if you really like the they guy and he nices or if it just because of peer presure. I think from 12 to 16 you can hang out with a boy at free period and in between classes and call him your "boyfriend" but when your about 16 or 17 you can have a real realtionship.
