Discharge discussion

Some of you have been writing in about discharge. What do I mean?

That mucousy stuff that you might see in your undies. Totally normal - and a sign that you are edging toward getting your period. Doctors say vaginal discharge happens about 6 months to a year before your first period happens. So it's a good clue, but not an ironclad guarantee that you'll be getting your first period within a year or so.

You'll find all you every wanted to know about discharge RIGHT HERE.

Hey PLS Gals,
Yes but very embarassing if males find out about the discharge.
I am a twin and my bro went through human growth and development and the last day my bro asked me afer school, "Have you had DISCHARGE???" and I was mad so I said "Have YOU had DISCHARGE???" Then he got mad and told my mom.
If you don't feel comfortable with the discharge just wear a pantiliner. Hope this helped.

I'm scared of it! EWWW! ME NO WANT!

What is it any way? My friend was its when the egg breaks and leaks. Is that right?

August 8, 2009 7:55 PM
Blogger Jemma said...

No it's not egg-related. It's fluid or mucus-type stuff that a girl's body makes body makes. Discharge is NORMAL. But a pantiliner can help you feel more comfy. Discharge actually has a job to do. Read more at:

As for underwear stains, you can always wear a pantiliner. Also, I think it's good to retire a pair of undies if it's looking stained and ragged.

No worries, girls. I asked a doctor friend and she said discharge is PERFECTLY NORMAL, even after a girl gets her first period. In fact, women have discharge throughout much of their lives.

so is it different for everyone. so some girls might have alot of discharge and some might only have alittle, and some girls might have discharge for 3 years and have not got their period and some maybe 1-2 years and got theirs.well i wonder how your body knows if you are ready or not.

The last post reply to anonymous who is 11 and has been having her period for a year:

I want mine.. I'm 15 and I don't have mine yet, your lucky, but also kinda unlucky, because you have to live with it for the rest of your life... =)

When you have discharge... Should you were a pad? Also, what is another way to speed up your period?? I know closing your eyes contributes to hormones... But does that associate with puberty/period? I think it does... Maybe I should wear one just in case, you know, my period happens right when I have discharge... Or does discharge stop after/when you get your period?

August 21, 2009 11:15 PM
Blogger Jemma said...

To respond to PrincessKate, closing your eyes doesn't affect your hormones. There's nothing a girl can do to speed up her first period. Hormones (special chemicals in the body) are important in puberty, but they work on their own schedule. For more about this, read All About Puberty:

Hi Pink Locker girls,
Please don't stop being athletic and playing sports! I talked to a doctor friend about your worries that being athletic can make you a late bloomer.

She said it's true that super-intense exercise plus unhealthy eating (or NOT eating, like in an eating disorder) can lead to big problems, including no periods.

But healthy amounts of exercise (the kind many girls get by practicing and playing sports) is great for your body.

Curious Girl,
Here are a few things that happen before I get my period...
1. Heavier discharge
2. Breasts feel tender
3. Breakouts(pimples)
4. Cramps
5. Mood swings
These are signs your period is coming, also called PMS. Watch for these things, keep a few pads in your locker or gym bag and you should be fine! Trust me! Its perfectly normal to have discharge but if it stops you from doing daily activities because it is uncomfortable, then either wear a pantiliner or change your underwear more often. I remember before I got my period, having discharge all the time is sooooo annoying! After I started having my period regularly, I only have it a few days before my period comes. Also, your discharge may be heavy before you have your period. Best of luck!
